Ozzy's Place: Your Oscar Fish Haven
Meet Ozzy, Cichlid Nation's Oscar mascot. Types of Oscars, what makes them happiest, food, health gear, living space, and the care facts your water puppy needs.

Meet Ozzy
Hey. I’m Ozzy.
I’m an Oscar. Scientific name Astronotus ocellatus, Amazon basin original, full-time snack enthusiast. Keepers call us the dogs of the aquarium world. I prefer pet water puppy. I know my person. I beg at the glass. I do a little wiggle when the food can comes out. I also rearrange the living room whenever I feel artistic, which is often.
This page is my place. Oscar haven. All the types of us, what makes me happiest, my favorite food and gear, and the care stuff your human needs so I don’t end up stressed, skinny, or pit-headed. If you want the long technical read, bounce over to the Oscar care guide. If something looks wrong with me, check Fish ER.
I’m fun. I’m messy. I’m worth the big tank. Stick around.
All the Types of Oscars
Plot twist: almost every type you see in the store is still me. Same species. Same big personality. Same care. The labels are color and fin fashion.

Still hunting a photo:
- Red Lutino
- Black / Super Black
- Copper
- Sunshine
Other shop labels (marble, velvet, long-fin mixes) are usually the same species with a marketing name.
What Makes an Oscar Happiest
I will tell you straight. Happiness for me is not a tiny bowl and flake dust.
- A big tank. One adult wants 75 gallons as a practical minimum. More is kinder. A pair or roommates need 125 gallons and up.
- Clean water. I am a waste factory. Over-filter. Change water every week. Dirty water is how I get grumpy, sick, and hole-in-the-head drama.
- A routine. Same person, same feeding window. I notice. I like knowing when dinner is.
- Interaction. Talk to me. Stand at the glass. That is the water-puppy thing.
- Enrichment. Smooth rock, heavy wood, open swim space. I will move it. That is enrichment, not vandalism.
- The right tank mates or just me, solo, as the main character. Solo is valid.

| Lifespan | Commonly 10 to 15 years (up to ~20 with great care) |
| Tank size | 75+ gal for one adult; 125+ gal for pair or community |
| Temperature | About 74 to 80 F (23 to 27 C) |
| pH | About 6.0 to 8.0 (stable beats perfect) |

| Temperament | Semi-aggressive; personable; digs and rearranges |
| Origin | Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America |
Filtration: aim for strong biological filtration, often a canister rated for at least double the tank volume, plus steady weekly water changes (about 25 to 40 percent).

Health Watch
I am hardy until the water gets lazy.
Hole in the head (HLLE). Small pits on the head and along the lateral line. Classic Oscar problem. Usually tied to poor water, weak diet, and stress. Fix water and food first. Then open Fish ER.
Ich (white spot). Salt-grain white dots, flashing, clamped fins. Quarantine new fish. See Fish ER.
Bloat. Swollen belly, not eating, lethargy. Do not guess forever. See Fish ER and cut the feast until you know what is going on.
Also skim Common diseases. Ozzy is not a vet. Fish ER is first aid, not a replacement for a fish-savvy vet.
Oscar Tank Mates
I have a mouth. Small fish will eventually audition as dinner.
Better ideas (big tank only): silver dollars, large plecos, severums, other large South American cichlids that can hold their own, and sometimes a bonded Oscar pair. Watch aggression. Have a plan B tank.
Bad ideas: neon tetras, guppies, shrimp, tiny community fish, slow fancy goldfish in a tropical Oscar tank.
Solo Oscar is a great pet. You do not owe me roommates.

Oscar Fish FAQ
How big do oscar fish get?
Most aquarium Oscars reach about 10 to 12 inches. Some hit 14 inches with excellent care and space.
How big of a tank does an oscar need?
Plan 75 gallons as a practical minimum for one adult. A pair or an Oscar with tank mates needs 125 gallons or more. Footprint matters more than height.
How long do oscar fish live?
With good water and a solid diet, Oscars commonly live 10 to 15 years, and some reach close to 20.
What do oscar fish eat?
Large cichlid pellets as the staple, soft carnivore foods, and occasional frozen treats. Skip live feeder fish.
What temperature and pH do Oscars need?
About 74 to 80 F and pH roughly 6.0 to 8.0. Clean and stable beats chasing a perfect number.
Can two Oscars live together?
Sometimes as a bonded pair in a large tank. Have a backup plan. Many keepers keep one Oscar alone.
What causes hole in the head in Oscars?
Often poor water, nutrition gaps, and stress, sometimes with Hexamita. Improve water and diet, then use Fish ER for next steps.
What fish can live with an Oscar?
Only large, sturdy fish that will not fit in an Oscar mouth, in a big enough tank. Small tetras become snacks.
Are tiger, red, and albino Oscars different species?
No. Color and fin forms of Astronotus ocellatus. Same care.
Why do Oscars rearrange their tanks?
They dig, shove decor, and redesign like water puppies with opinions. Use heavy, smooth rock and wood, and skip delicate plants.
