Meet the ropefish
The ropefish or reedfish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus) is a long, eel-shaped oddball from West Africa. It is related to bichirs, breathes air at the surface, and usually reaches about 30 to 36 inches. Soft sand, a sealed lid and meaty foods keep it happy.
Tank setup
- Plan a long 75 gallon or larger for an adult. Footprint beats height.
- Soft sand for burrowing and resting. Sharp gravel can injure skin.
- Seal every lid gap. Ropefish are escape artists.
- Dim light, caves, and smooth wood help shy fish settle.
Water and food
Keep temperature around 72 to 82 F with clean, well-oxygenated water. They gulp air, so a free surface matters. Feed frozen bloodworms, mysis, chopped earthworms, krill and sinking carnivore pellets. Many are shy eaters at first.
Tank mates
Peaceful fish too large to swallow work best. Avoid fin nippers and aggressive cichlids that steal food. Other ropefish can live together in a large, well-fed tank.
